Our People

Founder-led, supported by a trusted network

Bowenvale Communications is a founder-led consultancy, not a large agency and not a one-person fiction. The constant is Don Gould: the person who carries the history of the brand, the client relationship, the technical direction and the accountability for the work.

The way the work is delivered is deliberately flexible. Some projects need software and integration capability. Some need business process thinking, documentation, design, infrastructure knowledge, stakeholder translation or delivery support. Rather than maintaining an artificial permanent team, Bowenvale brings trusted people and specialist partners together around the needs of each engagement.

The model is simple: clear principal accountability, backed by the right people for the work.

Don Gould

Don has worked with computing, communications, software, infrastructure, documentation and small-business technology since his late teens. Bowenvale has been the vehicle for private consulting from around age 19, giving the brand a long thread of continuity through several generations of technology.

His background includes software development, systems design, databases, API and integration work, telecommunications, hosting, networking, project coordination, technical writing and business-facing technology advice. That mix matters because useful systems are rarely just code. They need to fit the people, process, data, infrastructure and business context around them.

Today, Don uses AI-assisted development tools as a high-level development interface. The value is not simply that AI can generate code quickly. The value comes from being able to direct the work, recognise weak assumptions, review the architecture, keep the solution inside the intended scope and turn a requirement into something practical that people can see, test and refine.

Christchurch, computing and design

A formative part of the story goes back to Christchurch Polytechnic in 1993, where Don and his future wife studied Business Computing. Their interests were complementary: Don moved toward software development, while she developed a strong grounding in hardware fundamentals before later studying graphic design.

That combination became part of the wider Bowenvale story. Through Think Design Print they worked together for many years across digital printing, concept development, branding, imagery and business positioning, helping small businesses, mostly in Christchurch, present themselves more clearly and confidently.

This is why Bowenvale’s current identity brings together technology, design, commercial thinking and Christchurch roots. The Cathedral and the wider city are not decorative motifs. They reflect continuity, resilience, rebuilding and a belief that local businesses and communities can keep building useful things here in New Zealand.

The trusted collective

Bowenvale works with a trusted collective of collaborators, businesses and specialists. These are not anonymous subcontractors presented as employees. They are working relationships built over time, brought into projects when their expertise, experience or delivery capability is useful.

Tusker Technologies is part of that wider ecosystem. Damien Mascord is one example of a collaborator, with others contributing specialist capability as projects require. This approach keeps the structure honest while giving clients access to a broader pool of knowledge than a single permanent role could provide.

The advantage is practical: clients deal with a principal-led consultancy that knows the work and remains accountable, while the delivery team can expand intelligently around the problem being solved.

The next generation

There is also a future-facing family dimension. Don’s son is highly IT literate and is developing capability with Codex, AI and modern development tools. That involvement will grow naturally as his skills and contribution mature.

The point is not to overstate a family-business story. It is that Bowenvale has moved from early personal computing, through software, hardware, design and digital business, into a new generation where AI-assisted development is becoming a native part of the toolkit.

How we work

Bowenvale is best suited to clients who need practical technology judgement, clear communication and the ability to turn ideas, requirements documents, integration problems or data challenges into working systems.

The work may involve AI-assisted software development, APIs, data platforms, documentation, automation, business process improvement, stakeholder communication or simply helping technical and non-technical people get aligned around a workable outcome.

Technology changes. Curiosity, relationships and practical knowledge endure.
